Toughest 'Super Punch Out' characters for Super Nintendo
Abaca Press

Remember when Nintendo was a big deal during everyone’s childhood? They released certified bangers on the system, including Super Mario World, Legend of Zelda: Link to the Past, and Donkey Kong Country. But there was one underrated game that didn’t get enough love: Super Punch-Out.

It features 16 fighters to fight in your quest to become the ultimate champion. The average player could also compete in time trial mode, where they could test their limits (and speed) against any of the 16 fighters. It was a modified version of the original Punch-Out, where players had one three-minute round instead of three.

Personally, this was a game from my childhood. I used to play this a lot as a kid, getting lost in the Nintendo boxing world at my grandma’s house. From my experience, here are three of the hardest fighters I’ve encountered in the game. And no, Canelo isn’t in the game.

Hardest Nintendo Fighter: Nick Bruiser

Obviously, the most difficult fighter would be the final boss, Nick Bruiser. It took a lot of moving and shaking to even bring this fighter down. He would do numerous things, like knocking you down with one overhead blow or shaking the ring with a flurry of punches.

Rumor has it that Bruiser went down to Gabby Jay’s mentor, Glass Joe. It would make for a hilarious story in boxing, similar to the modern-day Carolina Panthers beating the 1972 Miami Dolphins. Everybody loves a good underdog story, so why not root for Glass Joe?

Dragon Chan

Dragon Chan was the one fighter I’d always get stuck on in the old Super Nintendo game. He was quick, powerful, and could even heal himself mid-fight. However, that’s not the main reason why he was so brutal to fight against.

Chan had this flying kick that could knock out a boxer in one blow. He would hop onto a corner post like Spider-Man, hop towards the other, and fly at his opponent with a karate kick. If the player didn’t duck in time, they were in trouble.

Super Macho Man

Like the other fighters on this list, Super Macho Man has a one-hit KO move. He has a swinging clothesline that can go multiple times. The player must duck every time to avoid facing the mat. It’s not easy facing a fighter with a devastating weapon like a bodybuilder’s swinging fist.

But that’s not the only annoying part about Nintendo’s regular boxer. Super Macho Man also bounces around the ring randomly, making him tough to get ahold of. Throw in his excruciating “program exercises” and he can be an absolute pain to fight.
